We’re so sorry for your loss

we know how much it hurts

The gut-wrenching pain of losing your best friend feels like it will never end.

Your whole world has been turned upside down as you struggle to understand how you’ll face the days, weeks and months ahead.

We get it!

We’ve been in that dark, lonely and scary place.

As a devoted pet parent, it’s one of the worst pains you’ll ever feel in your life.

Losing a beloved companion is never easy but you don’t need to go on your pet loss journey alone.

Take a moment to ask yourself:

  • Are you feeling lost, alone and overwhelmed by grief, with no one to talk to who truly understands?

  • Do you find yourself wondering how to cope with the excruciating pain, sadness, confusion and guilt that comes with losing a companion who was so much more than just a pet?

  • Are you desperate for compassion and a safe space to share how you feel and be truly seen in your time of need?

  • Would you like to connect with others who truly get it and who’ve walked this painful journey, without any judgement?

Imagine if one day you could:

  • Feel more at peace with your beloved pet’s passing

  • Let go of the guilt and know deep down that you made the right choices for your best friend’s well-being, even when those choices were so hard

  • Look back on your time together with gratitude and peace, rather than pain and sorrow

  • Honour your pet’s memory by living fully, carrying their love and spirit with you as you continue your journey through life

If you’re feeling this way, know that you’ve found this Pet Loss Support Group for a reason. Your precious companion has actually guided you here.

We’re here to walk with you through this difficult journey and be part of a community that ‘gets it’ so you don’t have to do it alone.

How The Pet Loss Support Group Works

and what to expect on your first meetup

FREE VIRTUAL MEETUPS - join us from anywhere

Our Zoom meetups are available several times throughout the week. They allow you to join from wherever you’re most comfortable – whether that’s your bed, your sofa, or your favourite quiet spot at home. We know how hard it can be to leave the house when you’re grieving the loss of your beloved pet, and that’s why we’ve made it easy to join without any added stress.

Losing a beloved pet can feel overwhelming, and it’s not something you have to face alone.
Our FREE online meetups are lovingly created to support you through the heartbreak of losing your best friend. We understand how hard it is to take that first brave step when you’re grieving the loss of your animal companion. That’s why we want you to know exactly what to expect when you join us.

A WARM WELCOME - you’ve found your community

When you join a meetup, you’ll be greeted with kindness and compassion. You’ll meet fellow pet parents who truly understand what you’re going through. We know how scary it can be to join a new group, especially as you’re feeling so fragile and vulnerable. We’ve all experienced the pain of losing a precious companion, so you’ll never feel alone here.

A SMALL CIRCLE - your story and time matters

To ensure a supportive and intimate environment where everyone has the opportunity to share, each session has a maximum of 12 participants. Meetups usually last around 60 to 90 minutes, and there’s no obligation to stay the entire time. If you need to leave early or join late, we completely understand. Your well-being is what matters most.

A SAFE SPACE - to be seen, heard and heal

The Pet Loss Support group offers a consistent, safe, and compassionate space where you can share, listen, or simply be in the comforting presence of others who truly understand. Each meetup discussion is shaped by the group. Themes naturally evolve based on what you and others want to share and include topics such as guilt, loneliness and sadness.

This group and its members have helped me carry on with the healing process. I’ve found healing not just in being in a safe space to share and express my grief, but being able to hear other people’s stories as well. The kindness and companionship of people who ‘get it’ is invaluable.
— David, lost his beloved Greyhound, Jen, in September 2012

NO JUDGEMENT - only compassion and understanding

Every person in the group knows what it’s like to lose a cherished pet. They understand the heartbreak, the fragility, and the rollercoaster of emotions that come with grieving. Here, you’ll never be judged for how you feel or what you say. This is your safe space to share, to heal, and to be heard.

UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT - in a community that gets it

You’ll connect with like-minded pet parents who, like you, are on this painful journey too. Cry, laugh, share photos, reminisce, or simply sit quietly among others who understand. There’s no right or wrong way to grieve here - only support for whatever you need at the moment.

WRAPPING UP - choosing self-care because you matter

At the end of every session, we take a moment to focus on self-care. You’ll have the opportunity to share one small thing you can do in the coming week that will nurture and support you through your pet loss journey. It might be as simple as walking in nature, journalling, or choosing a special photo of your pet to frame.

RESOURCE LIBRARY - your toolkit for life

After your first meetup, you’ll get lifetime access to our resource library. It’s filled with helpful tools and suggestions to guide you through your pet loss journey. This library grows with input from our members, so you’re welcome to suggest resources that may help others navigate their grief too.

HAVE QUESTIONS? That’s completely understandable.

We want you to feel as comfortable as possible before you join a session. Check out our FAQ page (coming soon) to find out more.

Why The Pet Loss Support Group Was Created

TURNING PAIN INTO PURPOSE

Monday 27th February 2023 was the hardest and saddest day of my life. A day I’ll never forget!

It was the day we had to let Tilly, our 13-and-a-half-year-old Yorkshire Terrier go. Tilly was my baby, my angel, and the love of my life. She taught me the meaning of love - how to receive love and how to give love. She was the bravest girl I ever knew.

She proved this time and time again, especially after undergoing three surgeries for her cancer. Unfortunately, this horrible disease got the better of her and we had to make the hardest decision of our lives and let Tilly cross the Rainbow Bridge in February 2023. Just writing this hurts so much and brings back so many painful memories.

After we lost Tilly, I spent the next six weeks in a daze and unable to work. I spent my days in my dressing gown holding onto a soft doggy toy trying to feel any small sort of comfort I could.

I was completely heartbroken.

Fast-forward eight months, I was living abroad. On the outside, my life ‘looked’ great. The sun was shining and I was working with clients again running my own business, but on the inside, it was a different story. I was in a whole world of pain!

One afternoon, I finished work early to go climbing, one of my passions and things that saved me during my pet loss journey. I was sitting on the bus to the climbing gym and from nowhere a grief wave just hit me like a truck. Uncontrollable tears started streaming down my eyes and I couldn’t stop crying. I missed my girl so much. I just didn’t know what to do with the intense pain I was feeling.

I felt lost, and I was grieving alone in a foreign country.

Yes, I was lucky enough to have family and friends I could talk to on the phone and WhatsApp, but the truth was, they didn’t really ‘get it’ because they weren’t experiencing what I was. I wanted so badly to feel connected to other grieving pet parents and share my feelings in a safe space. I was craving to feel seen and heard.

I felt like I was going to explode.

At that moment in time, all I wanted was to talk to someone and feel connected to another person.

I knew that ‘talking’ to someone wouldn’t take away the pain or bring back my girl, but I knew (or maybe just wished) it would make me feel a little bit better, even if it was just for a few moments.

I opened up the Meetup app on my phone in the hope that I would find a group where I could talk to other grieving pet parents who were going through the same thing I was. I searched and searched, but I couldn’t find anything.

I was disappointed, and it was another blow that I didn’t have the emotional capacity for.

After the grief wave finally subsided, I took a moment and reminded myself of Tilly’s brave cancer battle. I was determined not to let my baby down. I wanted to make Tilly proud of me, just like she had always made me so proud.

So, at that moment on the bus, with my face covered in tears and a broken heart, I made a promise to myself - I would do whatever I could to prevent other pet parents from feeling so alone and in such pain on their pet loss journey.

I wanted to create a safe space for bereaved people to share their feelings and be heard without judgement.

And so, the Pet Loss Support Group was born. Inspired by Tilly, I chose to turn my pain into my purpose.

This group is dedicated to Tilly, the love of my life, and to all the pet parents out there who are grieving the loss of their beloved pets - you are not alone!

With love,
Sonia 💛 (and Tilly 🌈)

What our Bereaved Pet Parents Say

Our Impact on Grieving Pet Parents

The Pet Loss Support Group has provided a safe and understanding space for bereaved pet parents across the UK and Europe since November 2023.

Our group supports:

  • People experiencing pet loss, particularly those without an emotional support system of friends or family

  • Bereaved pet parents who don’t have access to or can’t afford therapy or counselling

According to the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, joining a support group or seeking therapy has been shown to help mitigate the effects of pet loss grief.

Over 80% of pet owners in the UK see their pets as family members (Source: University of Edinburgh), highlighting the emotional bond and the profound impact of their loss.

As pet loss is a disenfranchised grief and isn’t typically acknowledged, validated, or supported by society, it’s more important than ever for bereaved pet parents to have a community where they can grieve without judgment.

We’re grateful and proud to share that all of our participants say that the Pet Loss Support Group has provided a safe space for them to express their grief.

Will You Help Grieving Pet Parents Find Healing?

The Pet Loss Support Group has been running on love and compassion since it was first created in November 2023, operating without any funding.

Our meetups have always been, and will always remain, free to attend.

However, maintaining the marketing and running costs of this initiative is challenging, and we need your help to keep it going.

Bereaved pet parents deserve support. Losing a beloved pet is one of the hardest experiences a person can face.

Your generous donation will enable us to continue offering vital emotional assistance during this painful and often lonely journey.

Every contribution will help us to continue providing a safe space where grieving pet parents can find comfort, understanding, and the strength to heal.

With your support, we can ensure that no one has to face the heartache of losing their beloved pet alone.

Please consider donating today to help us continue this important work.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your kindness will really make a difference in someone else’s life.

This group has been the single most important thing I’ve done that has helped me deal with the loss of Bear. It’s brilliant and has been a lifesaver for me.
